Our clients were seeking a better flow and usability of their disjointed and cramped townhouse Kitchen, located in heart of one of Seattle's most coveted neighborhoods, Capitol Hill. They wanted to part ways with its dated 1990's finishes, so we pulled inspiration from a more enduring style, English cottage interiors. The idea was to create a jewel box of a traditional space, but with highly functional features that would defy the small footprint. We coated the space in a neutral putty green, in contrast to dark stonework. We added texture with a small scale bead board and sought out plenty of unlacquered brass finishes to incorporate a lived-in patina. We opted for building in the toe kick of the range to pay homage to the kitchens found in the UK, and built the island on casters to maximize spacial flexibility. It was important to cleverly disguised every inch of possible storage, by providing hidden pull-outs at corners and in the toe kicks. We maintained the existing hardwoods that marry into the adjoining rooms and preserved the double arch windows which are present across the townhouse's exterior.
